Victory couldn’t be more delectable!
Leveraging on effective strategies and thoughtful planning, and armed with ultra-brilliant rhetoric, the power of the Old Guards and their supporters was brought to the front, leaving the “Lau Administration” dumb- and indeed “dump-founded“.
I must admit that this was the first time I found myself at the epicenter of a highly-charged event (the French penchant for strikes got diluted somewhere down the line, thank goodness). Being a moonlight surfer, I could almost feel my soul being lifted by wave upon wave of passion and purpose, created by each and every individual’s voice that emerged from the ocean of 3000 people that day.
For every speaker who came out to defend the honour of the Old Guards and the milestones they worked so hard to achieve, who questioned the true motive of the New Guards, who rebutted with perfect articulation using the constitution, I was nodding my head vehemently. Cheering and even jeering, emotional gestures I never knew I had were manifesting themselves almost uncontrollably.
Amid the “noise”, a fatherly figure emerged. Turned out he was rooting for the other camp. Nonetheless. Amongst the mumble jumble of words he uttered, I thought I heard him quote from the Desiderata: Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. I unwittingly took a step back.
I looked at the faces of each of the New Guards on stage.
A few good hours later, the results of the vote count ignited wild celebrations. I don’t think I ever felt happier… until I saw this father figure again, making his rounds through the ailes, looking at the faces of the very women who just moments ago were launching verbal attacks at him for calling them a “congregation”. He continued, placidly amid the noise.
In a moment of empathy (emphasize: not sympathy), it hit me. These people – the New Guards and their COOS sympathizers, this father figure, just cannot see where they are wrong. “Forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:24). That’s how they look at people like us.
But then, isn’t that how I look at them as well?
“How can Josie Lau be so self-righteous and delusional??”, “What’s with these happy-in-their-own-world, I’m a father of three-people???”
At the end of the day, my beliefs, motivations and intentions will always be justified. That’s all well and good for me as an individual. But as a larger institution, the aggregate voice of the greater good is what decides its longevity and legitimacy.
The purging is complete and we have our rightful leaders at the helm.
Let’s now hope that the We in AWARE will always remain at its uppermost vertex.
